I just finished writing my first review for Girls like Comics, and I’m quietly freaking out.
I reviewed a webcomic called Mysteries of the Arcana. I’m not sure when my review will be live. I’m very new to this whole thing.
Weirdly, I think this exercise will be good for me.
When it comes to something that is an area of expertise – say international SEO or gluten-free baking – I’m perfectly happy to spout my opinion. I offer it up as an expert. I don’t weaken my thoughts with a lot of softening phrases like “personally, I think..” or “my opinion is…”. I just say what I think. Because I know what I know, and I’m damned good at it.
Reviewing comics puts me in a weird place. I’m not an expert. I haven’t been reading them for years. I haven’t been writing them for years. Sure, I consume a hell of a lot of them. But I don’t necessarily feel that my opinion on these matters is particularly refined. Being a reviewer – actually putting my opinion out there in a useful way – is something I’m uncertain and wishy-washy about.
I guess we’ll see how it goes. The link is now live! Here’s my review of MotA if you’d like to read it.
